Freud and the Collective Unconscious

Freud and young had a famous falling out partly over the notion of the collective unconscious. In his later work Freud starts to use the language of instinct and particularly species instinct. He's really thinking about what at the level of civilization are these mass unconscious instincts. Although he never talks about the collective unconscious they are, they are mass instincts. They're not just group psychology but things which are held by the collective.
