The Number One Way to Establish Identity Is the Creation of a Different Look

The key is that consumption of premium mediocre goods make you better than the people who don't consume them. The look has to have a meaning, and it has to have fit. And so the look comes with a certain status. If we were to give them actually better stuff, if hewere to have access to entertainment that's simply in quality sense, above and beyond what everybody else has, it would probably bankrupt the system.
