What Happened to Poppy Production in Afghanistan?

The US government spent an estimated $9 billion on eradication of opium production in Afghanistan. The land dedicated to cultivating poppy increased under the U.S. occupation, writes Peter Bergen. It led to the emergence of a cartel driven by the Taliban, he says. And so you had resources being spent which simply led to the consolidation of the industry,. while also lining the pockets of local political leaders who were already corrupt.
