The Debt Ceiling in the US

In the US, they have a debt ceiling and that is just a legal cap on how much debt the government can take on. I was kind of looking at the history of the US's surpluses and deficits just to get an idea of what that track record is like. But certainly in the last 20 years, especially with the huge amount of government stimulus needed during the global financial crisis and the pandemic, the deficit has just gotten worse and worse.
