There's now some great open-source game engines out there so there's good dough. We're even also starting to see open-source games like thrive which is an evolution simulation game that a community of developers have been working on for years and years because they wanted a more sophisticated version of this commercial game called spore. You can use these tools to work on console games though the SDKs for those are proprietary so you can't really go for a full end-to-end open- source game for most consoles I don't think. For old-school consoles like the Game Boy the NES the Super Nintendo there's actually a lot of open-source tools for making games for those older
