The way ruin imagines how the lepers must feel is so haunting on page 201. Groone puzzles over their strange laughter. The mind must get scarred from being rejected in this matter. These two have died to their loved ones and to society. And that wound is greater than the collapsing nose, the hideous face, or the loss of fingers. That's the purpose of a Lazaretto. He deadens the nerves and is therefore painless...and the only pain they feel is that of exile.
