Shame is a really painful, affective state. Many researchers think it is the most painful emotion that human beings can have. There are people who shame is so embedded in their personality where they just live with a basic story about themselves which they may or may not be aware of. When you were in an intense state of shame, we're almost in an altered state. People's eyes will drop.
