The tiny microphone trend emerged originally from kids just Experimenting with ubiquitous consumer electronics gear they have in their pockets now. Small mics can have a little trouble capturing low frequency sounds but small speakers Have a huge amount of trouble reproducing low frequency sounds for physics reasons that I don't claim to fully understand. The basic challenge is that you need to move a lot of air in order to reproduce a low frequency Sound and a tiny speaker simply can't move that much air So if you want your voice to have any depth and richness, it must be recorded at this kind of proximity. on a lav mic it tends to look a little ridiculous like a like a little puff ball And then your tiny mic
