How to Conduct Contextual Inquiry When Your Product Isn't Portable

I have a question about conducting observations or field research. So usually the advice is to go out and observe your customer or your potential user in their natural environment. However, I wondered how you go about doing this when the product you're working on is something that people use in their own homes,. especially if it's something that isn't portable.
