Hiccups present a challenge to researchers. You can't just make someone hiccup. Osborne, with his intractable hiccups, was the perfect test subject. Dr. Richard Wilson has been trying to identify and understand exactly how and when these neurons or rhythm generators evolved. Our work in frogs suggests that lung breathing is controlled by a rhythm generator in the nose end of the brainstem.
