Is there research on how people convert to religion versus when they leave religion? You know, like how long it takes or the kinds of experiences that lead them to find God or to give up God or religion? That's a great question. There is research on conversion. William James said that all spontaneous conversions have a long pre-life. A woman who studied moonies says she could always tell who was going to convert. She would watch these people come in off the street and like listen, they'd have dinner and then listen to the talk. The person who's more likely to convert is the person who's angry.
How do gods and spirits come to feel vividly real to people — as if they were standing right next to them? Humans tend to see supernatural agents everywhere, as the cognitive science of religion has shown. But it isn’t easy to maintain a sense that there are invisible spirits who care about you.
