There's a sense in which when someone says English there, what they have in mind is that image of the elite. And would you say I suppose that class informs crickets to an extent more even than nationalism? Because it seems to me that English culture doesn't inform cricket that much. Rather, the culture of a particular English class is perceived to have informed that image of crickets. The power of essentially the game was higher. Essentially the middle class is the start to populate in a vastly expanding public school system from the 1860s. Recognised that sport when played meritocratically as the archetypal level playing field was the wellspring of working class emancipation at the very least. So
