How did India, how did Indians see the British? We're talking still before the rebellion, largely. Were they seen as intrusive foreigners or exotic foreigners in a subcontinent with many languages and influences there? Well, I think, yes, they were initially. But once the company assumed dominance over large parts of the continent, they were much more than simply another group of people. And therefore, what came to be important for many Indians was not their character as foreigners, but their nature as rulers.
