The Importance of Stoicism

Stoicism is an extension of virtue ethics, Aristotelian virtue ethics. Our happiness depends primarily on our virtues and our actions in accordance with virtue. I can be virtuous or vicious, but nothing outside of me can be good and bad properly according to stoic theory. The comment that Marcus Aurelius is talking about is mostly your sort of emotional reaction to that thing. So it's not feeling shame, not feeling upset, not feeling like you've been ruined or wrecked.
