An alternate and more philosophically deep way of thinking about intelligence was given by my friend Weaver, aka David Weinbaum. He's looking at intelligent systems as a complex self-organizing system which is driven by the dual complementary and contradictory drives of individuation and self-transcendence. We don't have to be the smartest systems in the universe. we come out very dumb by that criteria, which may be OK. I think all these theoretical considerations have a lot of mathematical moving parts that are quite abstract.
