The Origins of Greek Trade
The economy of ancient Greece was defined largely by the region's dependence on imported goods. None of Greece's rivers are navigable, and only a few have mouths wide enough to serve as ports. The most common means of transporting goods over land was by a two-wheeled cart or four-wheeled wagon. Despite their low status, traders played a vital role in exchange of food, metals, luxury goods.
