Dostoevsky is offering us as an alternative to the, you know, incomprehensible suffering that Yvonne is struggling against. He implicates you and me together in a relationship of mutual obligation only answered by experience of what Zosima calls active love. The institution of the sariats of the elder or indeed the person of Father Zosima himself is not particularly comfortable, it doesn't sit particularly comfortable within a church bureaucracy or a church hierarchy,. So this is a discourse of hell and fire. Fathers and teachers, I ask myself, what is hell? And I answer thus the suffering of being no longer able to love.
