I was aware that there were criticisms of Dawkins' reliance on genes and selfish genes, which of course is a metaphor. Genes themselves are not selfish. I accepted what I think was the prevailing orthodoxy at that time. That group selection was only likely to be a factor in rather special circumstances. So if that's what you're talking about multi-level selection, yes from I was aware of it before as you said but I perhaps didn't think it was all that plausible"
