The History of Ashur
Ashur was founded in the third millennium BC as an entrepot to supply desired trade goods from further north. The Assyrian merchants at Kanesha provide one of the very earliest examples of a merchant network, operating mostly on credit and trust in world history. Ashur itself wasn't a particularly important place during this period; it became independent again around 2025 BC.
