The History of Cayenne Pepper
The islands of the Pacific did not cultivate them at the time of Cook's voyage. The Arabian physician Eben Bathar, who collected in the 13th century, all that Eastern nations knew about medicinal plants, says nothing about them. Probably the first record of its use is that by Dr. Chunka, who was physician with Columbus's fleet in 1494. From the ground dried seeds and pericarp of certain varieties of capsicum, we get cayenne pepper from French Guiana when it was imported by the French.
