In my field, there are no theorists. And the reason is pure economics, right? The theorists are the key to moving evolutionary biology forward. A theorist who basically needs pencils and access to the library doesn't bring in big grants. It's we've had a kind of a coup where the empiricists have taken over. But you need them paired with theorists.
