The Importance of Blood Culture in the Pediatric ICU

Rahul: A two-year-old with a prodom of URI symptoms, who is otherwise previously healthy develops respiratory distress and diagnose with pneumonia. The patient on hospital day two has developed a fever of 38.5 degrees Celsius; nurse needs to check with the pediatric resident whether a blood culture should be done. Pradeep: I would really stratify the thought process by assessing if or not the patient is immunocompetent versus immunocompromised as well as if the patient is hemodynamically stable or not.
