"I would bet the farm on the guess that 100 years from now, string theory will be viewed as a stepping stone towards a greater understanding of nature," says Hawking. "We're always going to be wrong, but hopefully a little bit less wrong every time." The physicist was interested in black holes before he was interested in string theory. He's used it with Kamran Vafa and others to help solve puzzles about quantum mechanics and gravity.
