How to Manage Nitrates in the Soil
Historian Daniel Immervar has written about the guano craze in his award-winning book, How to Hide an Empire. Birdcrap was the key to mitigating what historians call the agricultural fertilizer crisis. plants need nutrients and most notoriously they need nitrates to grow. It's hard to make new nitrates, but despite the weird fact that the air is like 80% nitrogen by volume, it's actually really hard to break that triple bonded nitrogen away from itself.
