Gail and I decided that psychoanalysis was the lens through which we could find alternatives to this way of living. We both intuitively feel like it's not really working for a lot of people. A lot of people out there who are very dissatisfied with their lives, they want to slow down. The book is the attempt to kind of conceptualize another way of life that would be something different from this instrumentalist self optimizing way in which we live our lives.
