The History of the Development of Nuclear Weapons
The Cold War may just be a matter of luck rather than deterrence that we didn't have another nuclear conflict. They came very close to using nuclear weapons over Cuba in 1962. The demonstration effects of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has created a taboo, which certainly played at least some part in restraining decision-makers during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
