Rommel's View on Defense
Rommel had no eastern front experience whereas the vast majority of the American army had this. Rommel's view was as a consequence of his desert experience that the overwhelming superiority of the Allied Air Force would not allow anything to move once the invasion had started and so he wanted to pack all his fire power forward. But in reality you do need depth to a defensive position but essentially what happens on Omaha eventually is less that the Americans pushed them off which of course they do. By then the Germans are running out of ammunition because they can't bring any more ammunition forward and they can’t bring any reinforcements forward eitherbecause they are completely stymied by these Allied air attacks.
