The idea of effective altruism was part and parcel of Sam Bankman Fried's philosophy. So effective altruism is focused on these world changing catastrophic events of the future, whether those are robots running the world, climate change, pandemics. The folks that tend to be the most excited about effective altruism and invested in it are familiar tech bros who are also implicitly saying that the government is not an appropriate place for allocating social services.
