Neurotransmitters and Oligodendrocytes
Myelin is produced by a glial cell type called oligodendrocytes. The covering creates insulation for the, or insulates the axon and allows the electrical signals that constitute neurotransmission to travel from point A to point B without being lost the way. Some people posit that because they're covering the axons, they're actually preventing the transfer of energy or resources.
