SPYCRAFT 101
Captain Hale's New York Schoolteacher Name Novachok
The name Novachok comes from the very well known Russian nerve agent. Most of his unit back on Manhattan Island were aware that he had volunteered to slip behind enemy lines undercover as a schoolteacher. So it's entirely conceivable that if a British spy in the colonial army learned of his mission they could have informed the British army what he was doing and where he could be found. There's no evidence pointing either way from what I have seen but it is so incredibly unfortunate for Hale that it almost defies belief.
