Is There a Better Way to Use Compost?

I've been curious about like exploring compost a little bit because to be honest my food management system is so bad right now and oftentimes like this is literally like run or I can't eat this anymore. So then when that happens we have this like so I live in like an apartment complex, right? And on our floor there's a trash chute and then they have like a trashChute or recycling and then a compost Seems simple enough, but I'm like what am I supposed to dump the compost in? Do I have to buy those like compostable bags or do do people just dump the compost straight into the chute like it's so confusing I got a compost chute.
