According to t epicureans, basically we don't control our imagination or thinking. We suffer from anxieties that cripple our ability to get a grip on the world. Many people are anxious about death. They go into something very much like this parasitic processing. If you expose people to triggers about their nmortality, they become cognitively rigid. And when your brain dies, your consciousness and character die with it.
