Is There a Fear of Determinism?
There's a fear of determinism. So you mean it's all wired in and I can't do anything about it, he says. Modern psychology says our brains have evolved through natural selection. And so much of our thought patterns and how we deal the world is a result of our evolutionary history shared with other animals. It doesn't feel right that our thoughts are due to our physical brains. In fact, to believe your thoughts are the result of your brain implies that when your brain goes, so do your thoughts. That's bad news for anybody who wants life after death.
