Painting the Town Red
The term amok originates from the Malay word mangh amok, which when roughly defined means to make a furious and desperate charge. An early Western description of the practice appears in the journals of the British explorer captain James Cook during his 1770 voyage around the world. When you literally think about it, it sounds like going out and painting things a red color. And so that is where the phrase running amok comes from.
