The Laws of Hammurabi's Empire
Masham was an average soldier and he got a small field. He would have worked the land most of the year, not on campaign for more than just about three months a year. The law doesn't say what would happen if a soldier like Masham dies. But there is a mechanism set up by the state to make sure that he would be brought home because there was an assumption that ransom would be paid.
