In recent years Muhtaars have actually become rather politicized. The executive the presidency has really become much more involved with their work and subjected them to greater oversight. There is also a broader and earlier development that is also influential in this politicization of Muhtaar issues. I think there has been a politicization of local issues which is multidimensional but related to the urban transformation projects in many neighborhoods especially in Istanbul not only in Istanbul.
