The individual contributor track is full of possibilities for leadership and for senior people to have widespread impact across a team. The best managers need to be great leaders because if people don't follow them, they're not going to be particularly effective in impacting a team. One of the challenges as a leader of a design team is also to protect the team from the occasional swoop in from executives or people at a higher level.
