The Inner World of Cuttlefish
Alex Schnell started her career by studying octopuses. She's now investigating the inner world of cucklefish. Alex wanted to design a test for self-control in cuttlefish. To do this she adapted the Stanford Marshmallow Test originally set up to see whether children could forego immediate gratification in order to get a better but delayed reward. The results were surprising since lab rats and pigeons can only tolerate delays of up to a few seconds. But on reflection it seems to make sense she says.
