The AFL emerged in the 1880s, which was literally right after the Haymarket affair. In this time period, the US labor movement was populated by all kinds of radicals and revolutionaries. They faced intense repression from employers and from the government. A lot of highly skilled workers didn't like this kind of radicalism or revolutionary ideologies. The only way forward for the labor in a country like the United States was to basically just accept capitalism as it was.
