Belsin had been a prisoner of war camp since 1940. 85,000 people from Auschwitz and camps around were herded back in 1944. They were placed in Belsin which was already overcrowded. Tens of thousands more tens of thousands lost their lives there. The dead and the dying lay close together inside the huts.
