There is a legal question about whether this was a war crime or not. From the moral point of view, what is the moral argument against using this kind of means to achieve the end? We did things that are deeply questionable, deliberately choosing civilians as a target of a sustained attack. There's this rich tradition of thinking that it is just plain wrong to treat a civilian population as a legitimate target in war.
