cartouches were first introduced in am, in what's ima cat am. They represented five trials and the goal of each trial. In order to become a perfect citizen you would go through five trials. If you matted all the way through to the final trial then you were killed but got eternal life. The idea is that when a cartouche enters the battle d return this trial from your graveyard to your hand.
