Chief justice john marshall and president thomas jefferson famously went head-to-head in a case called marbury versus madison. Marshall dreamt of a supreme court with national authority, writes Julian Zelizer. He believes in judicial supremacy, which is much more what we accept to day, says Zelizer. But there was this other thing, a much more restricted power that was on the table: judicial review.
