Dean Angela says it's unlikely Thomas would have been appointed to the court by his credentials alone. Traditionally, people appointed at the Supreme Court have a history of clerking for judges or working on lower courts. From what we could tell, Thomas was accepted to Yale in 1971 under an affirmative action program. His graduating class of 1974 had 12 black people in it.
