If you broke the rules, there could be severe penalties. You cannot attack a cleric, you can never attack a peasant or child. The local bishop or abbot would call these knights together and usually bring out relics of a local saint. And this worked sporadically. It did tend to quell the widespread thuggery and the beating up of local peasants.
