The Rise and Fall of the 11th Infantry Division

The Philippines campaign lasts until Japanese surrender in August of 1945. MacArthur was concerned that as the Japanese withdrew under pressure from the American advance, they would kill the prisoners rather than let them go. The 11th was tapped to conduct this rescue mission. It took a combined total of about a battalion-worth of troops from the division.
