Blessed are the poor in spirit. What does that mean? The poor in spirit? So is jesus talking about the economic situation of his hearers, which matthew as really highlighted for us, that they are, in fact, the poor. And so there these are people who are crushed. They're the beat down to the ones who don't think highly of themselves because no one else does either. It's all connected to their economic situation.
