The Virtue of Virtue

St. Thomas's notion of virtue involves an action which does not just become a reflex action, but we're also talking about a training of the whole person. Apprehension of the object is something which is good, willing the object as that good and moving forward with it in the light of where that takes us in terms of ultimate beatitude. So a virtue as St. Thomas conceives of it is more conscious, rather than being less conscious. It becomes something which we would call conatural to us.
