At heart, this was a conflict about rights. Each of those groups of actors made claims and then tried to defend them in open battle against ever-shifting alliances. The Cathelons themselves elected a French prince of the blood named René of Anjou King. It took until 1472, when John II finally took Barcelona to bring the conflict to an end.
