A year after he opened macbeth uptown in harlem, orsenwell moved down to the classical theatre and prepared to stage a musical drama that had been written by the composer mark blitston. The cradle will rock was kind of a labor opera, you know, about steel workers who were trying to unionize. About a character, a lead character, a poor woman named ma mal who turns to prostitution to support herself. These arts projects had conservative critics around the country, and especially in washington, who were increasing complaining about what they saw as a national, nationally funded arts programme that was just teeming with left leaning, communist radicals.
